“My wife made attractive dresses from low-priced mill ends; her old ones she made over for the children. My clothes became marvels of reconstruction. Small patches patched large patches, and larger patches covered all; these in turn were spotted with smaller patches until Joseph’s coat of many colors was patched on my shirt. When all strata of a garment wore out, my wife tore them into strips and knitted them into thick warm rugs with a pair of needles I made of a springy wire barrel hoop.”
Charles Vindex, describing life near Plentywood Montana in 1931.
